I call them baby-cakes, a perfect little gift for the new baby. Do you love to get those ooohhs and ahhhhs when your gift is opened at the shower? I do and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I saw this idea a couple of years ago on a blog (I apologize I have no idea where) and have made these cuties ever since.
{Baby-cakes in a Box}
A baby-cake is a onesie rolled up in a receiving blanket, tied together with ribbon and a coffee filter to appear like a cupcake.
These are so cute and so easy!
Start with 1 onesie, 1 receiving blanket (the thin kind), and a rubber binder (this is for a girl).
Fold the sides of the onesie in and roll it up tight.
Fold the receiving blanket in half twice, lengthwise.
Roll onesie tightly up in receiving blanket and secure with rubber binder.
I’ve used several different things for the top of the ‘cupcake’. For a boy gift I used little socks coming out. In this case, I used small hair clips – PERFECT!
If you are anything like me, you know the important part of any gift is in the details. Baby-cakes are cute, but who would get the point if they weren’t packaged properly?
Here’s the finishing details!
Place baby-cake in the center of a coffee filter and secure with a ribbon; making it look like a cupcake.
Buy a package of Window Treat Boxes, I got mine at JoAnne Fabrics for $3.99. They come with 3 sets of boxes per package; I hang on to them so I have the boxes for 2 more baby gifts.
I make 4 baby-cakes, they fit perfectly into this size box!
Tie your box with coordinating ribbon. I found this adorable cupcake ribbon to go with the cupcake theme!
{Baby-cakes in a Box}
So adorable!
You can get creative with these: different colors, colored or themed onesies or even cloth diapers. I made this version of Baby-cakes as a Christmas gift for my expecting sis-in-law. I wanted all them to be all white – did you know it’s impossible to find plain white receiving blankets? The expectant mom planned on using cloth diapers so I chose those instead of the blankets. I also used a larger box to make more for her!
I pulled a small part of the onesie out the top to create a little ‘puff’. Last, I packaged them in a Christmas box with coordinating ribbon.
