{DIY Topiary Centerpiece}

I don’t have a graduate this year (one more year to go) but I do have friends throwing parties over the next few weeks. I offered to help one friend with her 3rd open house. It’s her 3rd open house for a girl with the same school colors, each year we try to change the look of the party. School colors are black, red, and white; we decided to go with polka-dots, black and white decorative containers and my project for today -a  topiary centerpiece.

Supplies:

  • Foam balls – $2.47 each @ Walmart
  • Fake flowers – $10 per topiary @ Michaels
  • 1 wooden dowel – $0.47  @ Walmart
  • flower pots – $3.99 each @ Marshalls
  • moss – $1.00 @ The Dollar Store

The first step is to remove the flowers from the stems. These worked great because after removing them, there was a small stem left that worked perfectly to push them into the foam ball. If you needed too you could use hot glue or straight pins, for these particular ones I didn’t need to use anything – YAHOO!

Fill the foam ball by adding flowers. We used 4 different types of flowers.

Here’s how the finished flower ball looked. I use flower balls to decorate for parties and showers all the time. They’re cute, easy to make, and inexpensive. To see another example of how I used them at a baby shower, click HERE.

Next, I spray painted the dowel with white spray paint.

To put the topiary together I simply filled the pot with a piece of styrofoam, inserted the dowel, added the flower ball to the top of the dowel, and filled the pot with moss (it covers up the styrofoam).  Last, I added a small bow,  just because I LOVE bows!

Total: Approximately $30 for 2 centerpieces – not bad!

Keep in mind you can use this same concept to make any look or color you want (you could even use the same styrofoam and switch them out).  You can use different colored flowers, leaves or moss for the balls and of course any type of pot you’d like. These are great decorations for a graduation open house, shower or even a wedding.

Happy DIY Decorating for the Thrifty Woman!

Love you more than helping my friends and seeing them smile!
