{DIY Chalk Paint Table}

I’ve wanted to try ASCP (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint) forever! The only thing stopping me is that large price tag – I just can’t get myself to order it. Needless to say, I was so excited when I started seeing recipes for DIY chalk paint popping in up in blog land – YAHOO! I decided I had to try it for myself ! Chalk paint is a gritty paint that adheres well to furniture, without primer (I’m all about being able to skip a step) and looks great when distressed. It’s NOT chalkboard paint, but has a similar look and feel.

When I found this super cute table at Goodwill for only $6.99, I knew it was the ‘one’ !

The first thing I did was follow the directions I found at Coastal-Colors to make my chalk paint.

It was super easy; simply mix 1 cup paint and 2 tbsps non-sanded grout; that’s it! After 2 coats of paint, I gave it a good sanding to create the distressed look.

Last I used a dark wax called Briwax to give a vintage feel and to protect my hard work.

The main reason I fell in love with it was because of  the details on the sides (or maybe it was the fact it was $6.99 -HA).

It’s a nice chunky piece and even has 2 drawers in front.

My vote is, I LOVE the DIY chalk paint I tried and I LOVE how the table turned out!

  1. How much does the grout affect the color? I just discovered Steve has 10 bags of non-sanded grout in all different colors in the garage!

  2. LOVE your little table, it turned out great. i used the unsanded grout receipe on a piece i did, it turned out good but i think i put to much grout as it got really really thick to fast..ill give it another shot and use less.

    • Lauren – that happened to me too! And the first time I made it I made WAY too much (didn’t realize it would dry up, duh!). So I’ve learned my lesson on making too much. When mine gets to think I add a little more paint, even a little water and I’ve tried adding Flotrel to it and worked great! Thanks for stopping by!! HUGS, Sunday

  3. How well does this paint surface wear? Is it a bit softer than usual?

    • Hi Suella! It wears pretty well, I generally use it only on pieces that I want to distress and that I want to have an older look. I always seal what I do with at poly or a wax, which really helps. Thanks for visiting!

  4. Where do you find this wax? Lowes doesn’t have anything but clear minwax. I am starting my
    first diy chalk paint project today.

    • Hi Sara. I ordered mine through a small hardware store (ACE Hardware) because the big stores don’t carry it. You could get it on Amazon – by clicking on the Amazon Spot on the lower right of the blog. It’s called: Briwax Central Br-1-db Paste Wax 1lb – Dark Brown, that’s probably the quickest way to get it. I’d love to see a picture when you’re done :) Thanks for stopping by!
