{DIY Night Stand Makeover with Antique Technique}

{DIY Nightstand Make Over with an Antique Technique}

 I like to update, re-purpose, or redecorate some part of my house quite frequently. I’m always finding new ideas or accessories I just need to incorporate. I hadn’t really set out to update our master suite, OOPS, it just kind of happened. It’s time for a DIY nightstand makeover!

It was Kennedy’s fault really. After finding the adorable duvet on clearance (Pottery Barn Tween) for her Tween Room Update, I had to go snoop on the Pottery Barn site. I’ve been wanting to ‘warm’ up my room a bit. With mostly, white, black, blues and greens it could sometimes feel a little cold.

Enter beautiful PB Cora Duvet and Euro Shams – YEEEESSSS!

Once the bedding was brought in the room, I needed to update a few things to tie it all together.  My goal was to incorporate the ‘warmness’ of the colors and add a few little red splashes. My first order of business was to do a little DIY nightstand makeover with an antique technique on my white night standsI did the largest first.

{Before Night Stand}

Have you ever had a DIY disaster? Raise your hand! I wanted to strip the top and stain it to give it a 2- tone look. BIG FAT FAILURE. I stripped it down, only to discover it was laminate - DRATS. So, I was left with a stripped top with some sort of blonde wood color that I could not stain. I ended up repainting the top to start over- frowny face.

Time for Plan B

To salvage it, I decided to incorporate the stain onto the entire piece. I found something new at Walmart, Minwax Waterbased Wood Sheen. One sentence on the bottle caught my eye: Dries in One Hour.  That’s my kind of stain!

 I distressed the edges of the night stand with my electric sander and using a cotton rag rubbed the stain into those areas. I had a wet rag handy to wipe off any access stain. I call this my “AntiqueTechnique”.

The top edge of the night stand was raw wood so it completely absorbed the stain, I came to the conclusion I liked it that way.

To keep in step with the new ‘older’ look of the piece, I had to strip the paint off the hardware. I really like how they turned out!  I have a super easy trick for getting old paint off; simply soak overnight in an old crock-pot full of water and 1/4 cup Tide. It works like magic!

{After Nightstand}

A friend of mine called the other day and asked if I’d like 2 antique doors.  Let me think about it for half a second, YES PLEASE! The doors are awesome and made their way up to my room. I love them! I’m still tweaking a few things as I’m updating my room, but here’s a little lookie:

Hopefully, I’ll have a complete reveal for you soon!

Love you more than big antique doors,

Sunday

Please remember to give me a quick vote!

  1. [...] The next update had to be the nightstands. I will keep a couple of white pieces in the room but, I wanted to warm up the 2 pieces sitting right next to the bed.  I accomplished this by using an antiquing technique;  to see the post with complete instructions click HERE. [...]
