One of my biggest projects last summer was my boy’s room. I hated it for quite sometime and just needed some inspiration to get me started. I asked them what they would like and totally ignored them made it something they’d love…I think. My vision was to have a “locker-room” look and feel – perfect for boys!
{Before Boys Room}
At one point I was proud of the stripes I worked so hard on. I had a reason for them: the blue & green for the Timberwolves, the red & green for the Wild, and the red & blue for the Twins. After awhile it was just TOO much. The boys were getting a little order and needed their room upgraded to their age (14 & 16).
The thing I wanted the most was lockers. Because of an addition to our home a few years back, they had no closet – BIG PROBLEM. I decided lockers could be my solution and I looked forever. Then one day a friend got me in contact with a guy who had some FREE lockers for me – YAHOO!
These metal lockers were a great start, I was even looking for more to compete my locker room. My nice hubbs informed me that professional teams have wood built-in lockers. I had too google it to get some inspiration.
Here’s what I found:
I had a major score one day and found a 3 piece entertainment center at one of my favorite thrift stores for only $20; it’s Thomasville and in beautiful condition. No veneer, no particle board, just heavy nice wood! My original plan was to use it for my family room. Being I’m such a nice mother and all, I gave them up for the good of the locker-room.

There was a 3rd piece (sorry I forgot the before shot) that fit across the top, it even has lights. My sisters thought I was nuts for taking the top piece – it had a very 70′s vibe – but, I thought I could make it work.
The first step was to prime all 3 pieces. I used Kilz Primer.
Next, we used Dutch Boy Dura Clean in Black (I get mine at Menards). My sister was lovely enough to help me, we tried out our new paint sprayer.
Here’s the paint on us…
Here’s the paint on the lockers…
After putting a few of the doors and drawers back on the bookshelves I was ready to get them in their room. I stenciled their names on top to give that locker room look.
My vision really came together when I decided to put the metal lockers in-between the wood lockers. The best part was the top piece fit perfect across the top!
Because of the shape of the room it’s hard to get a good camera shot. I love how the lockers turned out – the set fit perfectly along their biggest wall.
DIY Lockers = $20 + paint
Happy Boys = Priceless

I’ll be sharing some of the smaller projects and thrifty ways I finished the room later this week!
