Master Suite Update {The Reveal}

I have a confession to make: I like to makeover, re-purpose and update, a lot. After recently updating my daughter’s room, I had the itch. If you missed her Tween Room Reveal check it out HERE.

I had wanted to warm up my room for a while being the color scheme was on the cool side.  Again, it all started with the duvet. I found a gorgeous duvet I loved on clearance on the Pottery Barn website; Cora Kalamakari.

The duvet really appealed to me because I could incorporate it into much of what I already had going on in the room. I simply needed to add a few touches of red and a few DIY updates to bring it all together.

In my opinion the bed, the bedding and the pillows are the focal point of the room.

I’ll start by giving you a glimpse of the bed; the new additions were the duvet, euro’s and the red pillow in the middle.

The next update had to be the nightstands. I will keep a couple of white pieces in the room but, I wanted to warm up the 2 pieces sitting right next to the bed.  I accomplished this by using an antiquing technique;  to see the post with complete instructions click HERE.

My favorite part of the update came one day right in the middle of it all. A friend of mine called and asked if I wanted 2 old doors she found at one of her rental properties. Do I want 2 old doors? Yes, please! They fit in perfect with the new warm feel!

I re-purposed a framed tin which used to hang above my bed, 2 updates ago.  By simply re-painting the frame to yellow (paint from my bathroom) and adding a couple of tin sconces ($1.99 at GW), I’ve been able to re-fill the spot.

 No room update would be complete with a trip to HomeGoods.  I found a pair of  PERFECT lamps; every ‘new’ room needs new lamps! They were only $29.99 each.  They weren’t quite tall enough so I added a book underneath.

I also added a DIY lamp to the room. Taking a garage sale brass lamp ($5), I spray painted it white and did an overhaul on the lamp shade. To see the post on how I did it, click HERE.

I couldn’t properly update the room without updating the window treatments. Lately, I’ve been into making things a bit more simple and I’ve also tried to bring in more of a natural feel. I took down all my treatments and replaced them with canvas drop cloths – my new fav! I love them because they are cheap, you don’t have to sew them, and they are easy to put up (simply add clips).

These are on the far side of the room over my large white dresser.

Many of the updated touches in the room came from garage sales or were re-purposed accessories I had on hand. To see some of my garage sale finds, check out this earlier post: Garage Sale Art & Other Great Finds.

For example, I purchased and made over this pair of $5 garage sale chairs 5 years ago. As I’m flushing out some of the black and toile fabrics in the room I knew these chairs needed an update. The great part is, it’s super easy to recover a seat cushion; it cost me $10 for 2 yards of fabric and less than half an hour to re-staple the fabric. My other HomeGoods purchase were 2 cute pillows…chirp, chirp.

I did cheat a bit on the chairs. I’m too cheap and lazy I like to re-purpose what I can so I re-used the piping  by cutting it out and simply stapling it in place instead of sewing it together the proper way. I’m not really sure if the dog will notice if he happens to walk underneath them.

One of my other favorite finds were my books for my secretary. Books are a super cheap and easy way to fill space; they make great accessories. I found these for $0.15 each at my local Goodwill.

Finally, without further a due (I’ve always wanted to say that)…

{After Master Suite Update}

I love my faux fireplace, I got it free from Craigslist one day – YIPPIE. On a side note: the TV is temporary (just for during  chemo while I need the extra rest).

Ahhh… my new room makes me happy!

I love to see a room come together with so many re-purposed items, garage sale finds, thrift store goodies, and one little PB clearance splurge!

What do you think?

Love you more than just sitting in my ‘new’ room and taking it all in,

Sunday
