This is a beautiful, detailed, and intricate book plate of a group in rehearsal in a barn. The troubadors and actors are dressed quite casually, with ample cleavage and leg, flowing adult beverages and unusual details, like the monkey in the extreme lower right, the scrawny barn cat in the lower center, and the child wearing an eagle costume feeding or pacifying a baby. Truly life on the medieval road. This is an intricately hand tinted lithograph, from the early to mid-1800s. The hand tinting is subtle, done with a light touch, and the scene offers an impressive scale. The engraving and drawing was done by G. Presbury from an original painting by William Hogarth. The lithograph or book plate is under glass, wired, and ready to hang. The frame is probably mid-century, around the 1950s, and it measures about 14 1/2" wide sold and 11 3/8" high and the simple black painted wood frame is 1 1/2" deep. The sight size of the book plate measures about 6 3/4" by 6 1/4". It is in good condition and the frame is in fair condition, as the frame shows wear and minor losses on the perimeter.
