Sold Vintage Grandma Moses Barkcloth Ironing Board Cover | Fits Boards up to 18 Inches Wide
sold This newly handmade ironing board cover features mid-century 1950s vintage 100% cotton barkcloth that is a reproduction of Grandma Moses' painting "Early Springtime in the Snow," which she painted in 1942. Details:
•Generously sized and fully adjustable with an encased elastic edge. Fits 18-inch wide boards, as well as standard boards (up to 54-inch by 15-inch wide). Shown on an 18-inch wide board, so less of the design will show along the sides on a 15-inch board
•1950s barkcloth, unused fabric in pristine condition
•Durable light upholstery weight fabric with a smooth, fine herringbone crepe-like weave (Zoom on closeup photo), perfect for ironing
•Not padded; should be used over a pad (see recommendations below)
•Constructed with bias binding edge, elastic drawstring that will not stretch out or break, and a cord lock closure
•100% cotton fabric, machine wash and dry (low) or line dry
ABOUT IRONING BOARD PADS: I used to make ironing board covers with attached pads. Then I discovered that my own covers wear and wash much better without a pad, so I started making all my covers without pads. You can use your existing pad, make one (suggestions below), or purchase a new one elsewhere.
There are a several good padding choices for ironing boards, including Insul-Bright, cotton batting (which many quilters use but seems to fall apart for me), and wool felt (my favorite). (Polyester batting and synthetic felt do not work well, because they do not withstand the high temperatures of an iron.) You can make a no-sew pad out of any of these just by cutting a piece a little larger than the top of your ironing board. If you use one of my covers, the elastic edge on the cover will hold your pad in place — you don't even need to finish the edge.
If you are interested in knowing more about Grandma Moses, her life and her art, I highly recommend a wonderful book, "Designs on the Heart - The Homemade Art of Grandma Moses" by Karal Ann Marling.
