Fabric designed and hand-printed by our members in our workshop in Gunbalanya in West Arnhem sold Land, NT.

The designers:
Sprotin Bangarr

The design:
Sprotin has created a design full of movement and fluidity, where different kinds of fish follow each other in synchrony, feeling the natural currents of the water. A beautiful harmony that can only be found in nature. He has painted the fish with single line rarrk hatching. Creating different textures, patterns and showing the backbones of some of the fish as seen in the ancient rock art style of West Arnhem land.
Sprotin's design is a reflection of his many fishing memories.
“I like to see the shallow water, all fish swimming around, one over the other, we can find Manmakawarri (catfish), Namarnkol (barramundi), Marngunj (nailfish), my favourite is Namarnkol. We take them and cook them on the fire.” Gunbalanya is an ideal place to fish, especially in Kudjewk (wet season) when there is water flowing everywhere and an abundance of fish. Fishing has always been an important ancient practice. Today, it is a popular past time for everyone in the community. A way to share time together, contemplate nature and have a great time.
