Witherite sold - Nentsberry Haggs Mine, Nenthead, Alston Moor, UK - 25x20x21mm / 19.7g - A Rare English Classic
An excellent stepped, cascading sold cluster of rare Witherite crystals from very close to its type locality (underground the two mines are connected). As is the case with many of these specimens from the Admiralty Flats there is surface alteration to barite which leaves the surface of the cluster with a frosted effect as it is covered with microcrystals of Barite - which can be seen under magnification. The back of the cluster is free of this, so the underlying clear to colourless colour of the Witherite can be seen. The top of the crystals are slightly naturally etched giving an intriguing texture. There is also a little matrix of grey altered limestone still adhering.
These hard to get specimens are world famous English classics and highly sought after.

Witherite (or Barium Carbonate) is part of the Aragonite group and was first described by William Withering, an 18th century English physician and naturalist. The type locality (Brownley Hill Mine) is of course in the Alston Moor district and is linked underground to the Nentsberry Haggs Mine. Witherite has also been known as Barolite, Viterite and Aerated Barytes. Most interestingly is the fact that it is one of only a few minerals species that are always Twinned. Whilst the Alston Moor locations are the most famous in the world it notably occurs in Hardin County, Illinois. Some excellent crystals came from Cave-in-Rock and the Minerva Mine at the heart of the Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar district.

All orders are posted by the equivalent of Priority Mail with a tracking number and are dispatched in 3 working days or less. Most orders ship with Slovenija Post although some heavier items can ship with a courier.
Delivery Times:
Standard Postage within the EU should take 3-7 days and to the UK around 7 days.
Standard Postage to the USA and the rest of the world generally takes around 10 days.
Delivery times are APPROXIMATE and outside of our control. In particular customs delays are possible. The tracking will show data from Slovenija Post and then the postal carrier in your country but not in between the two. Therefore, it does not show whilst the package is being processed by customs, only once it is released to your national carrier.
