Here is a genuine fossil from the sold Green River Formation, near Bonanza, Utah. From the Eocene, about 50 million years ago.
It is a beautiful little bird feather, small but with incredible definition (no paint has been added). To be specific, this is a particular extremely soft feather called down. Down is softer than other feathers, has no quill, and is found under the tougher exterior feathers.
As youu look at it under a magnifying glass or loupe (we suggest 8x), you can see how soft and airy this down would have been, with no quill to make it hard. It measures about 11 mm. from end to end.
The plate it was found on, which includes also a partial stem or branch of some kind, is about 6.5" by 5.3" (varies) and it weighs 1 lb. 9.2 oz.
If you turn the plate over, you can see part of a nice litte leaf, with the rest of it under matrix.

We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA's, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. In addition, the person selling the item is often the one who writes the COA (potential conflict of interest). Finally, a COA, without a photo of the exact specimen on the COA itself, is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral. We suggest that in addition to relying on a COA, that people read and study the subject.
