“Las Terremotas” is a collection of unique cushions hand weaved and embroidered, arose after the September, 2018 Mexico earthquakes.
They are made of fabric pieces our cooperator Areli bought during her traveling together with one of the humanitarian caravans organized by the Mexican people, to help the most affected areas.
Some women lost everything but other were able to keep some of their artwork pieces. Some of these became into what you are seeing in this “Las Terremotas” collection. They survived to those catastrophic days and next floods when the Earth decided to shake and get rid of any existing thing on it. This is the first “Hijas del Mar” (Sea Daughters) production, some women as strong as the earthquakes occurred on the lands sheltering them.
As a special cooperation are the hands of Itzel Gutiérrez, Mexican textile designer, who decided to help through the granting of her time and talent, under the basis of a cosmogony open window made of embroideries, impossible flowers and fabrics only existing at Oaxaca. Everyone is a unique piece. It's a collection of 38 pieces consisting in 3 sold groups: Animals, Garden and Sky.
This cushion are made with "cadeneta stitch", a sewing stitch for embroidery that is worked on a linear pattern previously drawn on the fabric. It is machine made, with stitching done diagonally, changing colors and creating complicated three-dimensional designs. This is the typical Zapotec woman's costume in the Isthmus of Oaxaca.
