Decomposing sea shells had an attraction for the surrounding sediment, forming mud balls under the sea. As the ocean recede, the balls were left to dry and crack, allowing Calcite crystals to form within them. A thin wall of Calcite transformed into Aragonite, dividing the shale exteriors from the Calcite crystals. These Septarian crystals were from about 50-70 million years ago. A beautiful piece to display or add to your collection.
