The Kingdom of Morocco is famous for its ceramics, covered with intricate, arabesque and rich geometric patterns. The intricate hand-painted ceramics from Morocco typically reveal designs that have been influenced by Islamic culture. This highly decorative ceramic style was greatly influenced by Moorish culture. The main ceramic centers are Safi, which produces metal-encrusted pottery, and Fez, which produces the very distinctive blue and white Fassi pottery and ceramics.
Moroccan tiles or Zellige are made from a unique natural clay, from the region of Fez (Morocco), This clay is kneaded with water, molded by hand and then left to dry naturally in the sun. Semi-dry, tiles are fired in an oven to create a square shape which are individually glazed before a second firing to allow the glaze to set. The irregular circulation of heat in a traditional oven (wood oven, or crushed olive pits) results in slightly variable colors. Therefore, each Zellige tile is unique with small imperfections in shape and color revealing the history of their manufacture. The cutting of the glazed tiles / bejmat in multiple shapes and sizes, to create the Zellige, tiles for specific projects is the last step in the process by hand.
