these vermeil style beads are gold plated over silver (97% silver content). the gold layer is 1 micron thick, which is 40 times thicker than most gold plated jewelry.
however, when the gold layer is under the 2.5 microns as defined by the federal trade commission for vermeil, the term "vermeil style" is used to avoid confusion.
