Akutokake is heel protector, worn on the waraji, straw flip-flop slippers while working in the field and rice paddle field.
Akuto means the heel of the dialect of northern part of Japan and kake means hook. There supposed to be a small loop at the one of the bottom corners to hook the second large toe. This type of noragi protects both heel and top of the foot.

At least two layers of fabric were stitched.
The stitched fabric is thick and sturdy.
Stitched all over the fabric to reinforce the strength of the fabric in Shonai Sashiko style.
Shonai is the area of Yamagata prefecture in northern part of Japan.
Cotton did not grow there and only available cotton fabric was second-hand ones from western part of Japan.
They attached two or more layers of precious fabric with small stitches to make garments.
Thick fabric was sturdy and offered warmth.
Stitches patters are from simple running stitches like those to the elaborate geometric patterns.
These garments were stitched with "sugi sashi", cedar stitches.
Because threads are almost in the same color of the fabric, it is invisible and subtle but chevron pattern is there.
It is interesting only simple vertical stitches can make a meaningful pattern.
Cedar means for sold the farmers growing straight and forever like cedars.
