This is a one of a kind piece from a private collection of African Tribal and Contemporary Art. These unique pieces were discovered in villages and markets over a period of 20 years while living and traveling in Southern and Central Africa, all of the items that are from this Tribal art collection are at least 30 years old and many of them date further back.

The Tuareg are a nomadic group of people who live in the area between the Sahara and the Sahel. Due to their nomadic lifestyle, they have limited material possessions. The smiths make all the material belongings, such as swords, tools, jewelery, leather work, bowls and utensils, and are the main medium for the creative expression of the Tuareg community. Every piece of work is highly decorated with simple, clean-cut, geometric designs. Most of the bowls are decoratively carved on the outside with geometrical shapes. Some have intricate, repetitive designs. The bowls would be used for all sorts of purposes. Sometimes cracks or holes in the bowls are repaired with pieces of metal which are hammered onto the wood and decorated with patterns. These repairs can add to the aesthetic appeal of the bowl.

This bowl was used in everyday life as shown by the repairs make over the years of use.
