Chinese Export Enamel Jewelry Box Trinket Box Colorful Floral Motif
ITEM: This little beauty is just a delight! With deeply saturated, fused enamels over a gilt brass metal, repousse floral motif, it's just as sweet as they come. The raised, floral relief looks to be chrysanthemums with leaves and little butterflies or bees. The colors range from a deep, azure blue hue, almost cobalt, to a grass green hue. The enamels are puddled in between the raised details in gilt brass metals. It's a gardeners dream box! Dating to the turn of the century, 1910-20s or so, it's nearly (if not actually) 100 years old. A Chinese export piece, it is signed underneath. A footed casket or trinket box, it sits up off the surface and is quite eye catching. There's a really good vibe on this tiny treasure chest that's impossible to properly convey without sounding a bit...umm... well you know! It wears its age with grace and dignity while not trying to look anything other than what it is. Maybe it's that warm, rich patina. Maybe it's those deeply lustrous enamels. I don't know for sure but it's likely a bit of both - and something more. It just feels good! If you're into this kinda thing then you're going to be into this one for sure. If you're looking for that special gift, for that special person, a person who can appreciate the loveliness of a beauty with a back-story, someone who appreciates things that are perfectly imperfect - this might be just the ticket! Because that's exactly what it is: perfectly imperfect, a treasure chest of high quality and style.
SIZE: This gorgeous little box is 3” across x 2 1/2” deep x 2” tall.
CONDITION: In good overall vintage or antique condition showing age sold related wear. It's not perfect. This piece is about 90 years old (+/-) and has been used. The lid rests slightly askew. It's not broken at all, the hinges are intact and functional, it's just a tiny bit out of alignment. It opens freely and closes readily. But you can see in the photos that there's a tiny gap. The enamels are in pretty good shape, there's no areas of loss, no chips, cracks or crazing noted. The gilt brass metals are rich with patina. Patina is a natural process of oxidation over time and is not considered a fault. You could shine it up if preferred, I happen to prefer it with that rich luster and would be worried about losing the original surface - but it's a personal preference rather than a right or wrong thing. If you prefer it a brighter, shinier metal, simply drop a note at checkout and add a day to shipping estimate. The main area of wear is actually inside the little box. As you can see in the photos, there's some staining inside. This is not a verdigris (green rust) nor is it metal deterioration; there's no dust or shards or other indications of metal rot - just those stains. Could be from ink as it was with other writing tools and desk supplies in storage. But I honestly don't know what it is. Aside from age, which, again, is fairly significant. There's no odor or anything. It's just there and so I'm disclosing that information. I always recommend using the zoom feature when viewing photos, to better ascertain condition for yourself and decide if the item meets your own standards. Personally, I'd not hesitate to put any of my favorite things into this lovely old box. It's just a sweet little thing!
Shipping is slightly higher on this so I'm asking for the difference between standard and tracked packet - about 5-10 bucks generally. More if headed overseas. Please contact me prior to purchase for a quote. Thank you!
