Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Thomas Nelson and sons, circa 1930 - de-luxe edition illustrated by Charles sold Brock.
My story...
I am a splendid Thomas Nelson edition of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, published by Thomas Nelson and Sons around 1930. You won't find many editions in such marvellous condition as me these days!
I am not dated but the prices of Nelson Classics advertised at the rear were 1s 6d (one shilling and sixpence) which was the price of the editions in the late 1920s and early 1930s. There is also an inscription at my front dated 1933.
I am illustrated by Charles E. Brock.
Practicalities:
-I am a small pocket edition measuring H 16cm and W 10.5cm.
-I weigh 234g.
Condition Summary:
I am generally in a good plus condition on my exterior and a very good condition on my inside with only minor wear. I do have an inscription: ‘Dorothy Lewin March 1933'. For specific condition points see below.
Why buy me?
I look absolutely fabulous in my fine leather look, navy covers! Can you believe I am around 90 years old? On them my gold-gilt titles and decoration still gleam brightly. Of course I am crowned with gold gilt top page edges.
Open me up to clean but age toned endpapers. Then turn again to see that
I am a simple, Classic no nonsense edition with just a brief biography of my esteemed author before my epic tale begins.
Opposite my title page you will of sold course espy the first of 8, full page black and white illustrations by the famous Charles Brock, which are absolutely enchanting.
My text is printed on pages in a highly respectable vintage condition.
The font of my reading pages is also a very comfortable size; many pocket editions have tiny print which is such a strain to read.
All this is held together in a robust binding which ensures decades more reading time of me!
I really am a delight and rare with my illustrations. I would make a wonderful gift for an Austen fan or collector.
As I am around 90 years old I will have signs of age and use:
Cover: mild wearing to the top spine ends more severe wear on the bottom spine end - see photo 2; the book corners are noticeably rolled and worn on their tips - see photo 3.
Page edges: gold gilt edge gently rubbed and scratched with some tiny scratches towards the spine end but there is a longer scratch present (see photo 3) which has slightly affect the tops of a section of papers causing tiny knock like tears (barely tears really as there are about 1mm) - see photo ; other edges clean but gently age toned with a couple of faint foxing marks and some lights rubs on the bottom edge.
Endpapers: mildly age toned but inconsistently in blocks - see photo 10; the inscription is present on the free paper. You might also see some tiny specks of foxing (very little).
Reading pages: very good generally - they are age toned and you can tell the first few pages of the book have been turned, but afterwards all is fine apart from the pages affected by the top edge scratch which has caused the tiny tears/knocks which gave also age toned in colour (see photos 9 & 10). There are a few tiny, folded top page corners on the first few pages (see photos 4 & 10). There is tight, natural creasing in some pages which was there at the time of publishing - if you find any others signs of age and use they will be very slight and rare!
Binding: very strong. My seller found only one age mark, on the illustration shown in photo 9. Otherwise the pages are mostly in a very respectable condition.
A note from my seller:
This edition is my favourite pocket book edition of this novel. It is an early edition, a de-Luxe edition with the gold gilt page tops and also has the joy of the Brock illustrations. This one is also in a very respectable condition. Thomas Nelson editions of this time are also very robust - their bindings stay flexible over time and don't crack like other leatherette, vintage pocket editions. A highly recommended
Austen treasure!
