Kintsugi kit for starters, now comes with silver finish set OR gold trial powder

Whether you are a Grayson Perry follower on instagram or you just want to fix your broken Diana Royal wedding mug, Kintsugi class is fun for everyone, whatever your skill.

Kintsugi starter kit. Including top quality urushi from Kyoto, brass powder, glue, putty, brushes, etc. All tools are selected carefully by Kintsugi Oxford, a kintsugi repair studio in Oxford.

If you would like to repair your plates you might try with silver or gold finish just after practice brass powder.

+ please select from one of the following options:

1g of Sterling silver leaf powder
0.15g of 23 kt. Gold leaf fine powder

NB. Brass powder is ideal for developing and practicing kintsugi skills, but it does not provide a food safe finish, which both silver and gold powders will provide.

The Gold kit includes fine gold which is easily applied to a repair. This fine gold power does not require any polishing and is easy to use compared to coarse gold powder. A more resilient gold finish is achieved by using 24kt. Coarse gold leaf powder, this requires careful polishing and skill of application. I only use coarse gold leaf powder in my own professional repair work as it gives a more durable result. 24 kt. Coarse gold leaf powder is available for purchase separately.

I can enclose black urushi instead of Red urushi. Usage and base material is the same between both Red and Black. Please message me.

I am always pleased to offer customers technical after-sales support by email or video call.

Please submit your telephone number when you chose Delivery upgrades.

Sorry, no return/refund accepted due to fresh materials.

No gift wrapping.

FAQ
Q: What are included in the starter kit?

The starter kintsugi set I sell includes a tube of good quality urushi imported from Japan, fine brass powder, epoxy glue, epoxy putty, and other essential materials and tools, plus silver powder OR gold powder at your choice. These materials are more than adequate for beginners. The traditional time consuming method of kintsugi is suitable for repairing antique, valuable and delicate items, but mastering the technique takes considerable practice.

Q: why not traditional method?

The four years that I have been teaching the epoxy+ urushi modern kintsugi technique, students have purchased more than 300 sets. Out of these students, only 10 have since approached me for traditional lessons using classic materials. If you are not a professional repairer, you will find that the epoxy based method is well suited to carrying out most repairs. At the demonstrations we first organised to introduce kintsugi to the UK in 2014 (at tokyobike*, the Daiwa foundation and the Ashmolean museum), two traditional Japanese craftsmen exclusively used the epoxy based method on ceramic repairs.

I recommend beginners to purchase my starter kit and experiment on your own whilst referring to the kit's instruction sheet and my web-site. If you need additional guidance, I can offer an on-line 1:1 tutorial session for £30, or £60 for a start to finish intensive instruction.

Q: Is this set Food safe?

Epoxy is not certified as food safe, neither are traditional kintsugi materials such as stone powder and sawdust. By sold sealing the joint of your completed repair with the genuine urushi I provide, it becomes safe to use for food and drink. If you would like to use your items for food, please try this kit with silver OR gold.

NB. The urushi my starter kit includes, comes from a specialist Japanese supplier and is food safe, however, but not all urushi, especially written as “something Urushi” are not food safe. Please check it with sellers . Brass is not food safe, so if your repair is finished with brass powder, it will not be food safe. Urushi finished with sterling silver or 22-24kt.gold will provide a completely food safe surface. A food safe repair can also be achieved by simply coating the glued joint with urushi alone.
