Antique Indian Kirpan Knife / sold Rare Collectible Handmade Sikh Indian Iron Blade Dagger with Sheath/ Ceremonial Knife
sold Vintage Handmade Kirpan: Measuring 11" total when sheathed, the length of the blade of this spectacular knife is 4.5". (28 x 11 cm). Originally from India, I was told it was at least from before 1950 and is quite obviously hand made. Examination of the backside photos show the incising of the bronze coloured metal with initials in an unidentifiable script (Sanskrit?). There are tin? accents on the sheath , all of which has been etched and punched into a geometric design and inset with glass "jewels”.
It is in good antique/vintage condition - though the blade is somewhat rusty and extremely dull. It fits very snugly into the sheath which has a bracket for looping onto a belt, but the silver top of the sheath is missing.
It is truly a fine piece of workmanship and a fine addition to any knife, or dagger collection, and may originally have been intended as a kirpan.
A kirpan is a sword or small dagger carried by Sikhs. Also, it is a religious commandment given by Guru Gobind Singh - Singh in 1699, who demanded that Sikhs must wear the five articles of faith at all times, the kirpan being one of five Ks. Wikipedia
